The phrase “heart of the action” couldn't be apt for Deansgate, a mile-long stretch that connects every part of the city centre. This historic thoroughfare is one of the liveliest spots in Manchester and was home to the first million-pound property in the city.

Fortunately, the average asking rents don’t come anywhere near such extravagance. Renters will enjoy a blend of old and new, along with innovation and culture, in what is a thriving hub in the city centre.

History of Deansgate

Deansgate’s thoroughfare is one of the oldest in the city, dating as far back as Roman times. Initially, the route passed the Roman fort and Mamucium, leading to the River Medlock, which was a ford and road to Chester.

Named after the lost River Dene, Deansgate evolved in the 1730s, going from rural to a built-up area after development of a quay of the river. As of the late 19th century, Deansgate had two contrasting sections: the south side was a working-class area and filled with slums, while the north side had become a shopping hub and had many offices.

At one point, crime was so bad in the south end of Deansgate that police refused to enter the area in fear of their safety. The Wood Street Mission started addressing the issues in the area, a successful intervention that planted the seeds which allowed Deansgate to thrive and become the bustling, modern hub it is today.
