Shepherds Bush is one of those place names that jumps out to you when you think about London, in fact it's one of the best places to live in London (in our opinion). I don’t know if that’s because my great Aunt lived there and it was the roof over our heads for away day football trips to London or because it’s a ‘proppa’ London area that dates back to the Iron Age and is steeped with history and stories of old.

There's loads of stuff to do in the area, so much in fact that we've had to create two posts on all the things to do in Shepherd's Bush!

Shepherds Bush is an area in west London that falls into the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

The name Shepherds Bush can be found in records dating back to the Iron Age, 704, and there are many stories as to how it found its name, the most popular being that the Common ground was a resting place for Shepherds on their way to Smithfield Market in the city. The area remained mainly rural until the middle of the 19th century and the 8 acre common land is a reminder of its history. Many an Australian and Kiwi have flocked to the area while it is also home to a strong Polish community.

Most the property in Shepherds Bush dates back to the mid nineteenth century and is dominated by three to four storey buildings that are generally divided up into flats. There’s also plenty of terraced properties from the mid nineteenth century. Hammersmith and Fulham benefits from a 3% cut in council tax prices, which doesn’t seem a lot but it comes at a time where the majority of the country have upped prices by up to 10%, every little helps!

Lowest cost for a 2 bedroom property - £1250 pcm (or around)

Highest price for a 2 bedroom property - £4676 pcm (that’s a cool £1100 p/w!)

Average Council tax £1034 annually. It ranges from £689 - £2068

Shepherds Bush is well served by the London Underground, with five stations dotted about the area. The stop labelled Shepherds Bush is the busiest station, served by the central line. Shepherds Bush Market, to the west is on the Hammersmith and City line, as is the south west’s Goldbank station while you’ll also find stops at Wood Lane and White city.

Eighteen buses run in the area and the addition of Westfield Shopping Centre means that all its surrounding areas are very well served and in demand.

Restaurants in Shepherds Bush

The Meat Company

The Meat Co

The Meat Co was established in 2000 and presents itself as a steakhouse but the décor and ambience of the room is much more sophisticated than your average steakhouse. Set in the cool and sophisticated courtyard area of Westfield Village, the restaurant is dedicated to giving a nod to its African heritage and Australian “surroundings” and has a relaxed atmosphere where business meetings and families are as welcome as each other.

Whether you’re after a pint in the afternoon with your mates or looking for an elegant dining experience, the relaxed nature of PV will appeal to both desires.

Jamie’s Italian

Jamie Oliver is known for his Italian, home-style "bish bash bosh pukka tukka" but his restaurants do deliver with a touch of elegance. You’d be forgiven for thinking “oh it’s just a chain” but each restaurant is unique and has its own menus and specials boards, all cooked using the best local ingredients.

atra polish restaurant Shepherds Bush London

Everyone is catered for in Shepherds Bush and being as there is a strong Polish contingent in the community we thought we’d drop this one in. They offer eastern European and Polish foods as well as catering for private parties with buffets and canapés. And of course, there’s a vast selection of Vodkas!

Address: 24 Goldhawk Rd, London W12 8DH

Aroma has great feedback online and is slightly different to our other selections. They offer an “eat as much as you like” promo and when you're in the middle of shopping in West 12 it can be the perfect option for refuelling before tackling the rest of the shopping centre! Check out the ridiculously mouth-watering videos they have of the food being prepared...nom nom.

If you're looking for a burger, these guys definately do one of the best burgers in London! You can build your own customised burger at the till (including toppings and sauce), with a choice of sides including a huge portion of fries (be careful if you're ordering big, you have been warned!!!)

For way more restaurants check our guide on why you need to get yourself down to Shepherds Bush!

BBC Television Centre, Wood Lane

This was the home of the BBC for over fifty years from 1960 - 2013 and is probably one of the most iconic buildings in the country. Parts of it are Grade II listed. In 2013 all the main broadcasting that took place from White City moved to Broadcasting House in central London. Nearest tube stops are White City and Wood Lane.

Museum of brands, packaging and advertising

If you’re into graphic design, branding, PR, marketing or just interested in expanding your knowledge on the things we see daily then get down here when you’re in the area. You can see how some of the biggest household brands developed through the years. Nearest tube stop is Notting Hill Gate.

Loftus Road

For a traditional, unique and non-corporate experience of a football ground, head to Loftus Road. The club may be throwing massive stacks of cash towards its transfer and wage policies but the stadium is a small, traditional ground that packs a strong atmosphere. For the 2014-15 season you’ll be able to enjoy Premier League football at QPR. The closest tube stop is White City.

Westfield Shopping Centre

Westfield Shopping Centre cost £1.6 billion and at 150,000 squared metres is the second-largest shopping centre in the UK. It can be found in White City and has four stops nearby; Shepherds Bush, White City, Wood Lane and Shepherds Bush Market.

West 12

West 12 is overshadowed by its larger shopping centre brother Westfield but there's still reason to go here. The food hall has a few good choices, there’s over thirty shops and a Vue Cinema. It can be found in the heart of Shepherds Bush and the Underground stop for Shepherds Bush is just opposite.

Goldhawk Road - Fabrics

If you’ve got a passion for fashion, enjoy making your own clothes from scratch or you are simply one of those people who always has a drawer full of fabrics, then head to this short stretch of shops in Goldhawk Road. There’s a diverse range of fabrics and it’s cheaper than its Soho counterparts. Shepherds Bush Underground is nearby.

Cycle Surgery

Cycle Surgery can be found in the previously mentioned West 12 Shopping Centre and is a must for all those who love cycling and running. With the two being arguably London’s best ways of getting fit we thought it’d be a great addition to the blog. They originally set-up because of their passion for riding but there’s also experts in running that work there, who will give you the real deal experience when picking your shoes by monitoring your running and studying your feet.
