There are lots of components that go into content marketing, one of which is backlinks. Getting a backlink from a reputable website is worth its weight in gold and can propel your letting agency up search engine rankings like Google. But how do you get them, and, more importantly, how do you make sure you’re getting the right ones? We’ve put this guide together, detailing everything you need to know about getting high-quality backlinks for your letting agency.

What is a backlink?

In layman’s terms, a backlink is a link from one website to another. From your point of view, it means a website will link to your website on one of its pages. Search engines like Google use backlink ranking as a way to determine if a site is noteworthy.

In Google’s mind, if lots of websites are linking back to you, then your site must be of importance. High-quality backlinks can help increase a website’s position and visibility on search engine results.

So what’s a high-quality backlink?

Every website has a domain authority (DA) score, which says how important it is – the higher your DA, the more importance search engines place on your website. The BBC, for example, has a high DA as it’s seen as a website that displays valuable information.

The government also has a high DA. So, technically speaking, Google would value your website highly if the BBC or the government linked directly to you. Of course, aiming for backlinks from the government might be a push too far, but there are plenty of authoritative websites out there that could give you a backlink and increase your DA. A good DA score starts from 50 (out of 100).

How do you get backlinks?

Like most aspects of content marketing, building backlinks requires time and patience. However, it’s well worth the effort, as it can reward you with organic SEO rankings that increase the reach of your letting agency. Follow these steps if you want to start getting backlinks for your website.

  • Add links to your site on your social media channels
  • Create blog posts on well-ranking keywords by reviewing the highest-ranked articles and trying to write better versions
  • Write blog posts that answer specific questions, such as “how-to”, “why”, and infographics. If websites find these valuable, they will link back to them
  • Write ultimate guide posts, as longer content with several thousand words cover every angle of a topic and rank well, thus increasing the chance of other websites linking to them
  • Contact influencers and tell them about your content, as they may want to link to it
  • Use tools to do backlink research so you can see what your competitors rank for.

Are there different types of backlinks?

There are two primary backlinks: nofollow backlink and dofollow backlink.

Nofollow backlink

A nofollow tag tells search engines to ignore a link. They don’t pass value from one site to another, so they aren’t typically helpful for improving your search rank or visibility.

Dofollow backlink

These are the backlinks that everyone wants, as they come from respected sites and hold the most value. A dofollow backlink can help improve your search engine ranking.

Look out for toxic links

While most backlinks from dofollow sites are good, some are considered “toxic”. These links tend to come from suspicious sites or places that have broken search engine terms of service. If Google thinks you are being linked to one of these sites, it may de-index you (more on that in a bit) – always remember that quality is needed over quantity when it comes to backlinks.

How can you monitor backlinks?

Not only are there tools to search for the right backlinks, but you can also use these same services to monitor backlink progress. Keeping an eye on your backlinks is necessary, as Google Webmaster Guidelines require you to ask toxic website owners to remove their links from your site.

If you don’t, you could find that Google will penalise you. As a result, your page rank will decrease. Therefore, you should always answer these questions when trying to get backlinks:

  • Where can I find my backlinks?
  • How do I know if they’re toxic?
  • How can I contact toxic backlink site owners?

Using a tool allows you to ask and answer these questions so you can stay on top of your backlink game and build your DA and rankings on search engines. All the while you're getting the right type of backlinks.

Bring it back(link)

Backlinks are an important part of content marketing and help you rank well on search engines. Having a robust backlink strategy can increase your agency's chances of becoming more visible on the internet and boost the number of landlords you sign up, as well as help you source renters for your stock.
